Sobering Darwin brings hope in Townsville for Reynolds

David Reynolds hopes that a disappointing Darwin round will deliver the sting the team needs to turn their mid-season fortunes around.

The Penrite Racing star has kept himself busy in between rounds, upping his personal fitness regime, whilst balancing his new life as a Father. On top of that, the Kelly Grove Racing new recruit also got to celebrate his birthday with his young family, after being separated due to travel restrictions.

“Darwin was a shock to the system to be honest,” said the now 36-year-old.

“I usually go pretty well up there, but for various reasons we just couldn’t get our cars into a set up window that worked.”

Despite the setback, Reynolds remains confident the team can turn things around.

“I have no doubt we will turn things around. We are learning all the time and there are some really strong positives about what we’ve learnt about the cars to date,” Reynolds said.

“As a team we’re gelling well, and I love the environment I’m in. In my experience, when a team works well together, it almost always results in podiums and wins.”

This weekend’s NTI Townsville 500 is a personal favourite of Reynolds. The Reid Park Street Circuit can be gruelling, but the 2017 Bathurst champion welcomes the challenges it poses.

“It’s always hot and I don’t mind that. You need to be aggressive, but you have to keep it clean and flow the car efficiently or you end up in a wall,” said Reynolds.

“Living in Melbourne, it’s just so good to get up north and get warm again. I’ve been working on my fitness and working closely with the crew to make this round count. The aim is to put my Penrite Mustang back in the top 10 – it’s a big ask, but I know we’re capable.”

The Repco Supercars Championship kicks off Friday 9 July, with two 40-minute practice sessions. A bustling weekend of action includes a qualifying session on Saturday followed by a return to the popular Top 10 Shootout format, closing with an 88-lap race. The Sunday program features another qualifying session, followed by another Top 10 Shootout which will ultimately determine the starting grid for Race 16 of the Championship.
