A mixed weekend at the NTI Townsville 500 has marked a return to form for David Reynolds.
Early practice sessions proved exciting for the Penrite Racing star, jagging a P1 from the first session and then a P9 from the second Friday session.
On the Saturday morning, Reynolds was 9th fastest in qualifying for Race 15, which set him up to compete in the Top 10 Shootout. Despite the pace of his #26 Penrite Ford Mustang, Reynolds could only claim P9 ahead of the 250-kilometre race.
“I just wasn’t able to get the balance right on the shootout lap,” said the 2017 Bathurst champion.
“But I’m still happy to have been in the Top 10 shootout after a disappointing Darwin round – and I’m keen to give our sponsors some more TV time.”
Saturday’s race 15 proved to be a brutal challenge under hot conditions. A scintillating start by Reynolds demonstrated to be the key to set up an exciting race, rewarding the Kelly Grove Racing pilot with front running track position.
“Saturday was awesome! It was great to be back up the front challenging the front runners, but ultimately we just didn’t quite have the pace to challenge for a podium”, a clearly hot and exhausted Reynolds said.
“We came away with fifth and it set us up for a really great weekend”.
Whilst Reynolds proved fast again the next morning, ultimately qualifying for his second Top 10 shootout, Race 16 proved to be more challenging than he hoped for.
“I managed to make the Top 10 again, but unfortunately I just couldn’t get the rear of the car balanced on my fast lap – and in the end I landed it in P10,” said Reynolds.
“The race itself was epic, I had quite a few battles but then on my last stint I had a mechanical failure. I had to bring the car into the pits and parked it up for a few laps until we could repair it. By then it was too late and all we could do was just finish and get what points were left for our Championship. We finished up 22nd.”
The Repco Supercars Championship returns to the Townsville track next week for a double header, with teams staying in sunny Townsville until further notice.
