Well, it wasn’t a bad weekend at Winton and I thankfully redeemed myself after last year!
We were only on track for Saturday and Sunday; so, the weekend certainly went much quicker than usual. Saturday’s practice wasn’t the greatest, but I thankfully did much better come qualifying. I had warm tyres for the last lap of the qualifying session, and I was able to come up with a really good lap and scored 3rd.
Starting on the second row of the grid ahead of the race, I was determined to stick to my guns and maintain or better my position. I had a massive battle at the start of the race, I managed to pass (James) Courtney and slotted into P2, however I was issued with a 5-second penalty for contact with Courtney. I was able to roll on and get on with it, racing with Whincup as I came out of the pits; which I did pretty easily. I managed to maintain my position and cross the line in third! It was an awesome effort by the team, and it was great to be back up on that podium (my first ever at Winton!).
Sunday wasn’t too bad a day either, I made it straight through to Q2 after practice and went further again into Q3 and claimed 4th! Starting from the second row of the grid again for the final race, I got a pretty good start; however struggled to do anything with it because it’s such a short run into turn one. For two stints, I played a lot of cat and mouse with Whincup, unfortunately he eventually got me after he pitted a lap before me in the last stint and he had warm tyres when I re-joined. There wasn’t much I could do, and he unfortunately pulled away. Overall, we learnt a lot from that race and the team did such a fantastic job! Certinaly a big improvement on last year, so I’m stoked!
I’m currently sitting fourth place in the Championship standings, only 11 points behind Van Gis!
