David Reynolds – Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 Wrap Up

David Reynolds Bathurst

The Mountain never fails to put on a show! I’m pretty happy with how we finished for the weekend. After starting from 22nd, to come away with fifth is pretty awesome – I couldn’t be prouder of the crew!

Thursday was a tough day, we were really keen on cutting laps and adjusting the car as we needed, unfortunately Luke ran wide in the co-drivers session which sent him into the wall at Sulman Park. The crew did an absolutely mega job in getting the car back out for Friday, I can’t thank them all enough.

Come Friday, Luke put the car in 12th for his session and I finished up fourth in the main driver session – which was awesome considering the damage the car had from the day before. Unfortunately, come qualifying rain started to fall and the car just didn’t feel great to drive in the wet. I couldn’t turn or brake and it felt like I was on slicks. I was guttered to come away with 22nd but knew anything was possible around this circuit! We obviously missed out on Saturday’s Top Ten Shootout and just focused on making the most of the final practice sessions.

We started Sunday’s race way down the back. There wasn’t a whole lot of pace in the car to begin with however, the car actually got better as the day went on. I was able to pass a heap of people and had some good battles. The team also made some great strategy calls which ultimately helped to put us in the top 5 for the back end of the race. It certainly was an interesting end to the race, particularly with Fabian and the Safety Car and holding up the field. It would have definitely been a battle for the finish line especially with McLaughlin conserving fuel and I feel like we had a chance to be on the podium as we had done an early fuel stop to see us through to the end. Although, fifth was all we could manage!

Even though The Mountain was hard on us at the start of the weekend, it was great that we were able to fight back and finish on a high. A true credit to the team.

Great effort by all at Erebus. Although the ending was or is being looked at to get 5th from 22nd proved a team worthy of previous win. Goodluck with the rest of the year and bring on the next 10yrs
