David Reynolds – Sandown 500 Preview
I’m really pumped to be heading into the first round of the Endurance campaign – the Sandown 500. What better way to kick it off than to go back in time and get into the spirit with the retro event!
We’ve had a lot of fun getting involved and unveiling our retro livery – based off the Chickadee inspired Toyota Celica driven by Bailey and Allan Grice who took out the 1986 Bathurst 1000, just weeks after they finished third at the Sandown 500. I feel very privileged to be sporting these colours and I can’t wait to get it out onto the track.
Sandown’s a fun weekend for us, it’s kind of a warm up and lead up to Bathurst 1000, so it sets up all your processes for your driver changes, pit stops and gives your co-driver a chance to cut some laps before we go to the big one!
The circuit length is 3.10km, the average speed is about 165km/h and the top speed is 270km/h, which is achieved along the back straight heading into turn six, which is commonly known as – Dandenong Road!
It’s not a great track in the wet, the surface is really old and it’s really bumpy. Turn 2 is the worst part of the track when it’s wet, as there is no grip through there. So this weekend will certainly prove interesting.
I can’t wait to jump back in the car with my co – driver, Luke!
We hit the track for the first practice session Friday 14th September at 10:40am.
Hope to see you there!
