A great finish to what I thought was going to be just an okay weekend on the Island. During the practice sessions on Friday we were P9 and P11 and I was kind of lost for pace. When it came to qualifying on Saturday, I somehow strung a lap together to put the car 6th on the grid for Saturday’s Race 9, where we finished up P7.
After sitting down with the team Saturday night and evaluating where we were at; it was clear my teammate Anton, was the shinning moment for our team. He was super fast in both qualifying and the race and from there we decided to use his set up the following day. If it wasn’t for Anton, we probably wouldn’t have finished up on the podium in second place like we did! So I owe it to him and Mirko – his engineer.
Battling with Scotty for P1 was incredible. It was hard work re – joining the field on cold tyres. When I popped out in front of McLaughlin after pitting – I knew I had to push hard, but I had a lot of under steer in those first few laps and he (McLaughlin) managed to sneak past me at turn two to take front position. Every time you pop out in the lead, you think you should win – but Scott is very, very fast around Phillip Island and there’s no taking that away from him.
I’m stoked to have bought home the ZB Commodore in 2nd place – our third podium for the season after only four rounds and we’re still sitting second in the Championship, 60 points behind McLaughlin.
Every time you roll to the track, your goals are the same – you want to qualify in the top 3 and finish in the top 3 and we will keep working towards that. Next stop… Perth SuperSprint 4 – 6th May.
Hope to see you there!
