I’m stoked to come away with some silverware from WA! A second place and my best result yet in Perth.
As I mentioned previously, Barbagallo tends to be one of my ‘bogey’ tracks – so I’m glad we’ve put that one behind us now! Friday and Saturday proved to be a couple of tricky days – a little inconsistent and then of course we had the pit stop mishap, where we lost 15 seconds and I re-joined the field in 24th and finished up 17th.
I was feeling pretty good ahead of Sunday’s race, we qualified 6th and I felt the car was taking to the track pretty nicely. I had a great race start, first stint, lead the race for a while, had good tyre degradation and it was all coming together – but we just missed out on first place. We were a little slower than others in pit lane and every time I re- joined, I had to pass too many people and that gave McLaughlin too big a gap.
I thought we were going to win the first stint because my car was looking after the tyres really well, but Scott had too much of a gap and I couldn’t catch him.
I was close to loosing my position on the last leg, I just passed two backmarkers down the outside of the second corner and I must have had some debris on my tyres and I wasn’t concentrating and I locked the brakes.
I went through the sand and I was thinking I was going to loose it completely, but luckily I got back on and finished second.
That’ll teach me for having a brain fart!
I’m now sitting third in the Championship points, 168 behind McLaughlin – so I can’t wait to get back to it at Winton, 18 – 20 May and try and bag some more points!
Hope to see you there!
