Well, we’re off to the final round of the 2018 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship and what better way than to finish off the year at the Newcastle 500!
The street style track is 2.6kms in length, has a low average speed of 133kms/hr and has a top speed of 220kms/hr. It is a bit of a slower track; it’s very rough and bumpy and is extremely tight and there’s zero room for error…. and I mean zero! But, it’s a seriously cool track to drive and probably one of the hardest tracks I’ve ever driven in my life!
The hardest part of the track for my car was turn 2, because it’s uphill breaking and is extremely bumpy and there’s drains everywhere. It’s also really hard to spot your break marker through this section too, as the car pulls up a lot quicker than expected. It certainly is challenging going at 220kms/hr and trying to break down to 60kms/hr in about 110 metres!
Last year was the first year for this event and there was a huge response from the fans and in particular, the locals. There has never been an event like this in Newcastle – so the fan engagement was massive!
Last year our car was really good there, we qualified 2nd and 3rd, and made it into the top ten shootout; where we claimed 3rd. We finished 5th on the Saturday and on the Sunday our rear bar snapped into two and we just managed to scramble together the car and cross the line in 3rd. That showed just how brutal the track is!
I thoroughly enjoyed last year’s event at Newcastle and I can’t wait to get back there this weekend!
We hit the track for the first practice session on Friday 23rd November at 11:40am.
Here’s hoping we can finish the year on a high!
Hope to see you there.
