David Reynolds – ITM Auckland Supersprint Wrap Up

Although it didn’t feel like an incredible weekend in NZ, we still walked away with finishing equal ninth overall for the round. I guess Sunday was just a bummer and pulled us down a bit, but I still think we have a lot of positives to take away from the weekend.

Friday’s first practice session was pretty average. Nobody got any dry running and we managed one lap at the end to check the car and managed to pull through in fourth. I did notice the difference in the changes made for the technical parity straight away though, so I’m glad that’s come onboard. The second session was a little better, we rolled out pretty fast and echoed fourth again.

Come Saturday, qualifying was really tough. We changed the setup overnight trying to find a bit more speed, but we probably made it slightly worse and could only manage seventh for the session. I made a bit of a mistake at Turn 6 and was probably on for fifth but lost a tenth.

I got a good start in the race and was able to pick up a few spots in the opening laps. Towards the end though, my tyres just didn’t have enough and although we were fifth on the road, we ended up third due to Will Davison’s penalty. So, we celebrated our podium the next morning.

Sunday was tough! Nothing else to it. I made a mistake in qualifying and went too fast into Turn 2 and came off the kerb awkwardly and went straight into the fence. I finished up 22nd for the session, which ended my streak in the Top Ten Shootout.

It was tough starting from the back of the grid for the final race. I got a good start though and was making my way through the pack, I think I made it to about ninth; then I came out of Turn 6, went for the throttle and it just died. Something went a miss; it went a bit spongey and so I somehow managed to limp it back into the pits. The guys did a great job in fixing it up and getting me back out for the remainder of the session, although 14 laps down and finished 24th.

Hopefully all the bad luck is out of the way as we head to The Mountain next – where it all counts!!

Thanks to everyone for their continued support!
