Bathurst…it never ceases to amaze me.
Thursday practice didn’t go to plan. On TV I was asked how the car felt – and I probably said too much. I think I said something like the car was biting me – or that I was scared of the car! But credit to the crew as they were able to tune it and gradually improve it. Craig Baird deserves some credit here too. He was able to work with myself and the engineers to set us up for a better Friday.
On Friday you could really start to feel the atmosphere building. The weather was good and the crowd started to build. On track we had more practice and we were really able to make more progress. By the end of Friday the car was getting faster but unfortunately qualifying didn’t go to plan. The car felt good but the set up probably got away from us a little.
That left us with a pretty cruisey Saturday. We practiced in the morning before the crew were left to spend the day replacing parts on the car ready for the next day ahead.
The Top 10 shootout was entertaining to watch…although I’d much prefer to be in the shootout myself!
The atmosphere was electric on Sunday morning. After an early start and breakfast with the team, we were ready to hit the track. I got a quick start and jumped a few spots. Within a short amount of time I settled into a rhythm. Although the car was quick in some sectors, we tended to struggle for straight line speed. But we stayed in the mix mid pack.
Unfortunately we had a mechanical drama mid race and found ourselves parking the car for a quick fix. Credit to the crew for getting the Penrite – Hungry Jacks Holden back on track.
When I hit the track again we were out of contention, so Betty told me just to have fun….and I did! On a low tank of fuel and tyres at their optimum, I had clear air and broke the lap record. It was a small reward for the team and Bairdo.
I want to thank all the team sponsors and offer a special thanks to my personal sponsors including MOMO, TSW Wheels, Apex Steel, Mongrel Boots, Harley Heaven and Plus Fitness. Your support and words of wisdom go a long way.
To everyone at Erebus you have done an amazing job this year. I love the team and look forward to the Gold Coast.
Finally….a big thank you to all of the fans. It’s so cool to see the banners around the track and I especially like to read the messages I receive on Facebook from fans who can’t make it to the track.
Congrats to Will and Jono Webb – well deserved victory!
See you at the Gold Coast!
