Adelaide 500 Wrap Up

Well I certainly proved myself wrong this weekend, very wrong!

If you had of said that I was going to finish 4th and 2nd at the start of the weekend, I would have taken that any day of the week.

To have brought home a podium (2nd) for the team is very special. It’s my best finish at the Adelaide circuit and I’m super proud of the team for their effort all weekend and the great job that they did in prepping the car – it was fast and I felt really comfortable in it.

My engineer had told me when I was coming in for the last pit stop (in Sunday’s race), that it was going to be very close with Shane (Van Gisbergen) and Garth (Tander), but I didn’t expect them to be as close as what they were. When I came out in front of them both, I knew I had to do my best to defend through turn 4, 5 and 7. I saw Shane was a fair way back from me and I was definitely caught off guard when it came to turn 9, as I didn’t expect him to make the lunge on the inside of me like he did.

I’m very disappointed in myself and looking back now, I wish I had of put up more of a fight, especially because once my tyres got up to temperature, a lap and a half later I was actually faster than him – which was another thing I couldn’t believe! There’s not much I can do about it now – I live and learn and I’m certainly happy with 2nd place!

Now it’s onto the Grand Prix from 23rd – 25th March, where for the first time, our points gained from the weekend will count. I’m hoping we can continue from where we left off in Adelaide and I’ll be sure to maximize every lap, every blocking opportunity, every passing opportunity and try and hunt the Championship down!

See you at the track!
